Academic Experience Strategic plan 2016-2021 goals:

GOAL 1: Promote student success with the delivery of high impact programs designed to connect students with academic support.

  • Strategy 1: Develop additional support services and programming for student groups: first-generation and minority students, international students, iChas students, provisional students, students participating in bridge programs,  Top 10%.
  • Strategy 2: Provide academic advising and academic services (tutoring, SI leaders, peer academic coaches, etc) that support student success and graduation
  • Strategy 3: Provide comprehensive introduction to academic and student support services during orientation and programs/services designed for first year students.

GOAL 2: Create transformative learning experiences.

  • Strategy 1: Create explicit curricular and co-curricular linkages that help students connect in-class learning with out-of-class opportunities for leadership experiences, personal development, community engagement, and application of new knowledge.
  • Strategy 2: Increase collaboration among all AEX units and throughout the campus to enhance excellence in undergraduate education.
  • Strategy 3: Increase opportunities for student leadership and peer mentoring opportunities.

GOAL 3:  Build a local, national, and international reputation that highlights the work done by the Academic Experience units and provides valuable exposure to the College of Charleston.

  • Strategy 1: Enhance opportunities for staff development and engagement and foster an inclusive environment. Foster staff retention and recognition.
  • Strategy 2: Enhance visibility through national and international exposure by presenting, publishing, and marketing the quality of AEX programs and services.
  • Strategy 3: AEX staff will strengthen its leadership role in, and contributions to, the campus, the community, and the higher education profession.

2016-2017 action items

  • Implement IMPACT programs to support PR, iCHS and Connect 2, and Top 10% students. (goal 1, strategy 1) 
  • Provide two required Advising appointments and Peer Academic Coaches for all students in IMPACT programs. (goal 1, strategy 1)
  • Help iCharleston students explore their study abroad location by implementing a Google Map activity during their fall semester. (goal 1, strategy 1)                
  • Students who attend their academic advising appointment each semester will be able to develop a plan for student progression to graduation.  (goal 1, strategy 1)  
  • Provide an intentional advising model for provisional students that encourages use of campus resources. (goal 1, strategy 1)
  • Planning and design for the new Charleston Bridge program- prepare for advising, registration, and residential components of the program (Summer 2017) (goal 1, strategy 1)
  • Provide two required Advising appointments and Peer Academic Coaches for all students in IMPACT programs. (goal 1, strategy 2)
  • Provide information session for PR students and separate session for PR parents at new student orientation. (goal 1, strategy 3)
  • Provide Connect 2 Charleston Orientation session for students in Connect 2 Bridge Program.(goal 1, strategy 3)
  • Pilot StrengthsQuest in select FYSS seminars  (goal 2, strategy 1)
  • Present Green Zone Training to AEX staff to prepare for student implementation. (goal 2, strategy 1)
  • Collaborate with Office of Dean of Students to present information session about FAST to faculty/staff departments.  (goal 2, strategy 2)
  • Offer a second year faculty advising academy workshop.  (goal 2, strategy 2)
  • Hire PAC coaches from successful PR students. (goal 2, strategy 3)
  • Request full time lines for several AEX staff serving in temporary positions, update position descriptions, request salary increases, and address equity issues and support recruitment and retention of high-quality staff.  (goal 3, strategy 1)
  • Provide AEX staff strengths training. (goal 3, strategy 1)
  • Develop mechanisms for fundraising to increase resources. (goal 3, strategy 2)
  • Representation by AEX staff on key SACSCOC committees. (goal 3, strategy 3)

2017-2018 action items

  • Fully implement 2nd Year Experiences for Impact Programs (workshops, individual strengths coaching, service project) (goal 1, strategy 1)
  • Implement new Charleston Bridge program (CofC/TTC)  (goal 1, strategy 1)
  • Provide individual strengths coaching for students in Impact Scholars program. (goal 1, strategy 2)           
  • Offer student strategies in a workshop as well as online format.  (goal 1, strategy 2)
  • Provide IMPACT scholars information session for students and parents at new student orientation. (goal 1, strategy 3)
  • Implement Strengths Quest in all FYSS classes (goal 2, strategy 1)
  • Look for opportunities to incorporate aspects of sustainability into programs and services that AEX departments provide that support the QEP (goal 2, strategy 2)
  • Hire PAC coaches from successful IMPACT scholar students (Top 10%, iCHS, Connect 2) (goal 3, strategy 3)
  • Formally recognize staff publication and presentation activity (e-news, appreciation breakfast). (goal 3, strategy 1)
  • Increase number of publications and national presentations by AEX staff. (goal 3, strategy 2)
  • AEX staff will develop a clear understanding of relevant College policies. Presentations will be included in AEX new staff orientation (goal 3, strategy 3)

2018-2019 action items

  • Fully implement 3rd year programming for IMPACT programs.(workshops specific to 3rd year students; individual coaching sessions, service project, faculty mentors) (goal 1, strategy 1)
  • Provide career mentoring opportunities for students in IMPACT scholars program. (goal 1, strategy 2)
    Provide information sessions for Connect 2 students at their 2 yr. institution in the fall semester prior to admission.(goal 1, strategy 3)
  • First-Year Experience Peer Facilitators will complete all requirements for International Mentor Training Program Certification and receive individual IMTPC Certification (Level 1, 2, or 3). (goal 2, strategy 1)
  • Work with faculty to promote SI and use of SI leaders for courses with high DWF rates. (goal 2, strategy 2)
  • Provide professional development opportunities for orientation interns and other student leaders. (goal 2, strategy 3)
  • Make use of campus climate survey results and other measures (e.g., follow-up focus groups) to thoroughly understand and address issues affecting quality of work life and employee satisfaction and engagement. (goal 3, strategy 1)
  • Strengths implementation on campus  (goal 3, strategy 1)
  • Present information on a national level about EDLS academic recovery approach and use of Destination Success textbook. (goal 3, strategy 2)
  • Promote ways that faculty and staff can alert services about students - inform them about the use of F.A.S.T. as a way to refer students experiencing difficulties that may be impacting their academic performance. (goal 3, strategy 3)

2019-2020 action items

  • Fully implement 4th year programming for IMPACT programs (workshops specific to career placement, resume, cover letter, interviewing, connections with career center and community mentors) (goal 1, strategy 1)
  • Provide community mentors for students in IMPACT scholars program.(goal 1, strategy 2)
  • Provide information sessions for students and parents in the Top 10% group in their home schools and communities. (goal 1, strategy 3)
  • Students enrolled in TEDU 205 (Exploring Leadership: Building Peer Facilitation Skills) will recognize and identify key topics and issues related to peer education and peer mentoring. (goal 2, strategy 1)
  • Strengths Implementation on campus (goal 2, strategy 2)
  • Incorporate a peer advising model in AAPC. (goal 2, strategy 3)
  • Provide opportunities for student affairs staff to collaborate with AEX - look for joint presentation/publication opportunities. (goal 3, strategy 1)
  • Each department director will develop and implement one strategy to promote a giving culture among identified stakeholders. (goal 3, strategy 2)

2020-2021 action items

  • Fully implemented connections with graduates of IMPACT programs. (goal 1, strategy 1)
  • AEX will establish a Steering Committee to develop an annual plan based on best-practice research to provide academic support for the top three countries of origin of international students admitted to the College.  (goal 1, strategy 1)
  • AEX will conduct a needs assessment relative to the unique academic and social integration needs of new international students. (goal 1, strategy 1)
  • Provide support for veteran students - scholarship/financial aid, resume development. (goal 1, strategy 2)
  • Create internships for students participating in the REACH program that facilitate skill building that leads to competitive employment (goal 2, strategy 1)
